Three things, three kinds of specialist
Our care team looks at three things that affect your weight, with different specialists for each:
- Your stomach. Our procedure team performs endoscopic and surgical procedures that change how much you can eat and how quickly you feel full.
- Your hunger signals. Appetite is driven by hormones and biology. Physicians and nurse practitioners use medication, where clinically appropriate, for the signals a procedure doesn't reach.
- Your daily habits. Registered dietitians and behavioural specialists help you rebuild portions, pace and routines while the change is new.
Your procedure is performed by a SmartSleeveMD surgeon. The physicians, nurse practitioners, dietitians and psychologist around them come from our medical partner WeightSimple. Meet the team
The range of options
Medical weight management through WeightSimple
Doctor-led and fully virtual, with obesity medicine physicians, GLP-1 and GIP medications when clinically appropriate (provided at cost), a registered dietitian, a registered psychologist and remote monitoring. It's an option if you're below the usual BMI range for a procedure, would prefer to try medication first, or aren't ready. Medical care with WeightSimple
Endoscopic procedures
Performed through the mouth, with no incisions: the intragastric balloon, a temporary first step removed at about six months; endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty (ESG); and transoral outlet reduction (TORe), for weight regain after a gastric bypass. Recovery is usually measured in days.
Surgical procedures
Keyhole surgery through small incisions: sleeve gastrectomy, gastric bypass and SADI. All three are permanent, and recovery takes several weeks.
Typical total body weight loss reported in published literature ranges from 5 to 7% for the balloon to 35 to 45% for SADI.*
*Published literature, not SmartSleeveMD outcomes data. Individual results vary.
How you're matched to an option
At your consultation, a surgeon looks at your BMI, health conditions, previous procedures, goals and preferences. As a general guide, the options discussed are:
- BMI 27 to 35: endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty (with related health conditions below BMI 30) or an intragastric balloon, or medication-based care through WeightSimple
- BMI 30 to 40: endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty, or any of our surgical options: sleeve gastrectomy, gastric bypass or SADI
- BMI 35 and above: sleeve gastrectomy or gastric bypass, especially with conditions like type 2 diabetes. ESG is still an option, and a GLP-1 medication may be added if you want greater weight loss
- BMI 40 and above: SADI or gastric bypass, with sleeve gastrectomy and ESG still options, sometimes after medically supervised weight loss to improve safety
- Previous gastric bypass or mini bypass: TORe, if weight has returned
Your full health history matters as much as your BMI. If a less invasive option, a less expensive one, or no procedure at all suits you better, we'll tell you. See who each option may suit
Changing course later
If you start with WeightSimple and decide on a procedure later, the same care team can continue with you, and your progress comes with you. After a procedure, medication management through WeightSimple stays available if clinically indicated.
Your next step
A free consultation, by video or in person, is where the matching happens. Check your BMI below to see which options might be worth discussing.
